Spring Cleaning Your Calendar: A Mid-Year Reset Guide
By March, your January planning system has been tested by real life. Maybe it is working perfectly. More likely, some parts work and others have been quietly abandoned.
A mid-year calendar reset takes 30 minutes and sets you up for a productive spring and summer.
Step 1: Audit What You Actually Use
Look honestly at your current system:
- Is your wall calendar still being updated? Or did it stop getting entries in February?
- Are you using your weekly planner, or has it become a to-do list graveyard?
- Do you check your yearly overview, or has it disappeared behind something on the wall?
Anything you have not used in 3+ weeks is not part of your system. Remove it or replace it.
Step 2: Fix the Gaps
Identify what fell apart and why:
- Stopped updating the wall calendar? It might be in the wrong location, or the writing cells might be too small. Print a fresh monthly calendar and try a different spot.
- Weekly planner abandoned? You may have picked the wrong format. If you used open format, try timed format or vice versa.
- Digital and paper out of sync? Simplify. Pick one as the primary and the other as supplementary.
Step 3: Refresh Your Physical Calendars
Print fresh copies of everything you are keeping:
- A new monthly calendar for April through June
- A fresh yearly overview with your updated events
- A clean weekly planner for next week
Starting with clean pages removes the psychological weight of uncompleted items from January and February.
Step 4: Update Your Yearly View
Print an updated yearly calendar and mark:
- Summer vacation dates
- End-of-school-year events
- Q2 and Q3 work deadlines
- Any new commitments added since January
Step 5: Commit to the Next 90 Days
Do not plan the rest of the year. Just commit to using your refreshed system through June. Set a reminder to do another quick audit then.
The best calendar system is one that evolves with your life. Spring is the natural time to let go of what is not working and double down on what is.
