A Simple Monthly Planning Routine to Reset Every Month

Published June 8, 2026 · Updated July 7, 2026

Weekly reviews keep the trains running. But without a step back, you can spend months being busy without moving toward anything. A short monthly reset fixes that. Here is a 20-minute routine you can run on the first of every month.

Step 1: Look Back (5 minutes)

Before planning forward, review the month that just ended. What got done? What slipped, and why? Keeping last month's monthly calendar in front of you makes this honest and quick -- the evidence is right there.

Step 2: Set Two or Three Priorities (5 minutes)

Not ten. Pick the two or three outcomes that would make this month a success. Everything else is secondary. Writing them at the top of a fresh monthly calendar keeps them visible all month.

Step 3: Map the Month (5 minutes)

Print a new month from the monthly generator and mark the fixed points first: appointments, deadlines, travel, birthdays. Then place a few blocks of time to actually work on your priorities, so they get real space instead of leftover scraps.

Step 4: Connect It to Your Weeks (5 minutes)

Your monthly plan only works if it reaches your weeks. As each week arrives, carry the relevant pieces into a weekly planner during your Sunday review. The month sets direction; the week does the work.

Make It Stick

Put a recurring note on the last day of each month: 'monthly reset tomorrow.' Twenty minutes a month is a tiny cost for staying pointed at what matters. All of our calendar generators are free and print on standard paper, so you can start this month.
